  Drinking Bird #161
Drinking Bird  Do you remember these? The first time I saw one was when I waited in line for hot lunch at school, 2nd grade. The Lunch Ladies (that was still PC at the time) must have put it up on the shelf while we waited endlessly, at least for a second grader, in line. It's bobbing back and forth certainly was memorable, and I can't believe I was the only one who thought that the bird must have been drinking, somehow...! Now you can own your very own! Great for the shelf, or as a science demonstration! How does it work? Here's my understanding. The head is covered with a red flock material. This is dunked to get it wet. Now, water evaporates from the head, much like fingernail polish remover evaporates from your hand. This evaporation cools your hand, as the water evaporating from the head cools the head. The head is hollow, much like a balloon. If you take a balloon outside in the winter, it shrivels up a bit and the gas inside takes up less space. The same is true here. The air in the head is cooled, takes up less space, and liquid is drawn up the neck. This topples the bird into the glass, his beak is made wet again, he tips back, and on and on. Ingenious! Oh, the fun you'll have! Get one today. (If you'ld like a set of six for more experiments, class sets, or gift giving, just visit our "SPECIALS" section of the site!)
